Sports Camp '24

August 11-14, 2024

Bergen Christian Sports Camp '24 ended on Wednesday night after four evenings of sports, fun, and learning about Jesus. Although it had a wet start on Sunday, the week was wonderful. The kids were involved in baseball, basketball, soccer, races, and many other physical activities each night. Adult and teen volunteers gave instruction and encouragement while doing drills, playing games, and teaching teamwork.

Sports Camp was started 10 years ago when a group of men who had been meeting for prayer and Bible study decided they were going to reach out to the youth of Bergen. Many of these men are still involved in Sports Camp each year.

This year over thirty volunteers were involved in Sports Camp. Two main areas for the volunteers were directing the sporting activities and guiding the young people from one activity to another. Other volunteers provided water and snacks each evening, helped with registration, provided any necessary medical help, and countless other small details. Some of our volunteers even had superpowers like playing soccer with a baby on the hip.

Each night also involved a time of learning about faith in Jesus. Different speakers helped the children relate the Christian life to different parts of playing sports - coaching, following the rules, and running the long race. These highly interactive talks encouraged thinking about life in Jesus in everyday terms.

On the final night, Jocelyn used six of the teen volunteers to read scripture on their cell phones. (Some had to install a Bible app to do this - clever Jocelyn!) Using these teen readers she presented the "Roman's Road" - very appropriate after talking about long-distance running.

Joe and Jocelyn ensure that every child attending Sports Camp has a Bible. The joy on Blake's face and his excitement as he ran to show off his new Action Bible was wonderful. This is what it is all about!

Joe ends every year with a run around Hickory Park, usually to the theme music of "Chariots of Fire". It is our prayer that each young person is encouraged to run the race!

I have fought the good fight,

I have finished the race,

I have kept the faith.
